Saresh, The Weeping Black

Saresh, of the Weeping Black is a significant lore figure and endgame boss in Path of Exile, specifically taking a central role in the 3.28 Mirage League.

PoE Saresh, The Weeping Black

Who is Saresh?

Originally a member of the Order of the Djinn (the same secret society as Jun Ortoi from Betrayal), Saresh was known as the "Surgeon of the Dead". He was a Faridun outcast who became obsessed with "intrinsic darkness" and necromancy, eventually leading a massive undead horde against the Maraketh in the Vastiri Plains.

He was long thought dead, having been defeated by Garukhan (the Queen of the Winds). However, his return is a core element of the 3.28 endgame, where players draw his ire by "meddling in the affairs of the Afarud".

Saresh Locations

If you meddle with the affairs of the Afarud for too long though, you may draw the ire of the Mirage league's new Endgame Boss. Saresh, of the Weeping Black.

PoE Saresh Locations
  • Role: Pinnacle Boss.
  • Source: Introduced as part of the Mirage content update (launching March 7, 2026).
  • Lore: A Djinn tasked with studying death, previously killed by Garukhan.
  • Associated Mechanic: Appears as players free other Djinns from the Afarud.
  • Access: He can be accessed by using a The Black Barya in the map device.

Saresh, of the Weeping Black, is a new Pinnacle Boss introduced in the Path of Exile: Mirage update. As a member of the Order of the Djinn who studies death, he acts as a, antagonizing force to players who interfere with the Afarud, rewarding those who defeat him with exclusive, powerful items.

Exclusive Drops & Rewards

Saresh also has a set of powerful, exclusive items. Yours for the taking, if you are able to defeat him.

Related PoE Challenge 3.28

1. Without being affected by Astral Chains

  • The Mechanic: Astral Chains are a primary tethering mechanic in the Mirage league. During the fight, Saresh or his mages will attempt to tether you, slowing your movement and potentially pulling you toward hazards.
  • How to Avoid: Maintain high mobility or use "blink" skills (like Dash or Frostblink) to break the line of sight or distance yourself from the source immediately. Some Mirage Challenge Guides suggest breaking these chains as a core task for early challenges.

2. Without being affected by Festering Souls

  • The Mechanic: Festering Souls is likely a debuff or ground-based effect common to Saresh’s "necromancer" theme. It typically builds up stacks that reduce recovery or deal chaos damage over time.
  • How to Avoid: Keep moving and avoid standing in dark, festering pools or near soul-like projectiles. High chaos resistance is recommended for Saresh, who has innate chaos affinity.

3. Without being hit by any Gangrenous Mass explosions

  • The Mechanic: Saresh summons Gangrenous Masses (undead or organic growths) that swell and explode after a short delay.
  • How to Avoid: These masses are stationary once summoned. Watch for the swelling animation or a circular indicator on the ground and move outside the blast radius before they detonate.

4. Without being hit by Charged Soul Slam

  • The Mechanic: This is Saresh’s "telegraphed" heavy melee or area-of-effect attack. He will likely charge up energy before slamming his staff or weapon into the ground.
  • How to Avoid: When you see Saresh stop attacking and begin a long "charging" animation (often with a visual glow or sound cue), immediately move behind him or use a movement skill to get clear of his front-facing arc.

Role in 3.28 Mirage League

  • Endgame Boss: He serves as the primary pinnacle-style encounter for the Mirage League.
  • Combat Style: The fight is described as a high-intensity battle against a "Necromancer Supreme," featuring his "marauding undead legion" and complex positioning requirements.
  • Lore Connection: His abilities are linked to the control of sandstorms and "Weeping Black," a dark power that also influenced the creation of Metamorphs.

Historical Lore References

Saresh has been hinted at in item flavor texts and NPC dialogue for years before becoming a physical boss:

  • The Hallowed Monarch: Contains a quote from Sekhema Orbala (the mortal form of Garukhan) addressed to him.
  • The Storm Blade: Mentioned by Petarus and Vanja in Act 9 as a weapon used in the ancient war against Saresh's horde.
  • Metamorph: Associated with the historical Metamorph scarabs, suggesting he was the first to experiment with the dark "intrinsic" powers Tane Octavius later studied.
