In Path of Exile 2, Abyss encounters drop a special line of currency items that desecrate rare gear. For weapons and quivers, this function comes through the Jawbone line of items.

How Desecrated Modifiers Work

Desecrated modifiers are unique because they exist in a hidden state until revealed. Here's how the system plays out:

• Socketing the Modifier: Using a Jawbone currency item applies an unrevealed Desecrated modifier to your weapon or quiver.
• The Well of Souls (Act 2): Take the item here, and you'll be given a choice of three modifiers to reveal.
• Basic vs. Unique Mods: While many choices are normal affixes, in late-game maps, the pool may include modifiers that don't normally appear on weapons or quivers.
• Prefix or Suffix Slots: Even while hidden, Desecrated modifiers occupy a prefix or suffix slot, meaning your crafted rare has one fewer free slot until you reveal it. Once revealed, the item can only roll valid options for that affix type.

This makes Jawbones a powerful way to gamble for strong affixes, but also a strategic decision—you're committing a modifier slot before knowing what it will become.

Why It Matters

Desecrated currency is one of PoE 2's big crafting shake-ups. On weapons and quivers, rolling rare affixes that might otherwise be impossible is a huge advantage. For bow builds, quivers in particular can get unique modlines that open up new damage or utility options.
